Efe amisión europea Juice se enfrenta en nueve días a sun reto sin precedentes: pasar porel "pasillo' existente entre la Lunay la Tierraen apenas24 horas y captar energía de sus campos de gravedad para dirigirse hacia Venus, en un complejosistema de maniobras defrenado y aceleraciónnunca antesrealizado en el espacio.
Las maniobras, diseñadas y trabajadas por centros de investigación de todo el mundo durante la friolera de 20 años, tendrán lugar entreel19 yel20 de agosto, y el grupo de científicosdela Agencia Espacial Europea encargados de dirigirlas anunció que la trayectoria de Juice está ya "ajustada y preparada" para la hazaña. La sonda sobrevolará la Luna el19 de agosto, alas 1746 horas de Chile, y 25 horas después, 17.57 del20 deagosto, la Tierra.
La misión Explorador de las Lunas Heladas de Júpiter: Juice (del inglés Icy Moons Explorer) se lanzó el 14 de abril de 2023 con una duración de ocho años y el ambicioso objetivo deexplorar el entorno de Júpiter y sus tres grandes lunas oceánicas: Europa, Calis10 y Ganímedes (la mayor y la única con campo magnético intemo). El objetivo dealta precisión es lograr que Juice siga durante ocho años la dirección correcta para completar el estudio del entorno de Júpiter, a 800 millones dekilómetros de la Tierra, y de sus tres grandes lunas en 2031.
FRENAR Y ACELERAR El primer gran hito de la misiónserá este primer vuelo entre la Luna y la Tierra: "Será como pasar por un pasillo muy estrecho, muy, muy de prisa, y pisar el acelerador al máximo cuando el margen al borde de la carretera es de apenas milímetros", señala el director de Operaciones de Juice, Ignacio Tanco.
Esta maniobra de "frenado", sin precedentes hasta ahora en el espacio, es una forma de atajar a través del Sistema Solar interior, y aunque el riesgo es altísimo, ya que el más mínimo error podría desviar a Juice de su ruta y suponer el fin de la misión, los investigadores se han mostrado optimistas de que se lleve acabo con éxito. "Vigilaremos cada segundo del trayecto día y noche, y haremoslos pequeños ajustes necesarios para mantenerla nave enel rumbo correcto", detalla Nicolás Altobelli, responsable de desarrollo de actividades científicas de Juice. Losinvestigadores han diseñado hasta seis modos de corección detrayectoria distintos para quenadaquedeal azar.
SIN PRECEDENTES El sobrevuelo de la Lunaa la Tierra proporcionará un entorno de pruebas privilegiado para activar diez instrumentos científicos dela nave, y recopilar y analizar datos de una superficie real en el espacio por primera vez. Para algunos de estos instrumentos, ésta será la única oportunidad derealizar determinadas mediciones durante los ocho años que dura el viaje aJúpiter.
Elsobrevuelo dela Lunaa la Tierra es especialmente crucial, entre otros, para ajustar el instrumento RIME (Radar for ley Moon Exploration) antes de llegar a Júpiter, ya que se está viendo afectado por ruidos existentes en el interior de lanave.
Durante el momento de máxima aproximación ala Luna, RIME dispondrá de ocho minutos para observar en solitario, con los demás instrumentos apagados o en modo silencioso, y en base a esas observaciones se trabajará en un algoritmo para corregir su problema del ruido. Repararlo es fundamental porqueRIMEservirá para estudiar la superficie y el subsuelo delas lunas heladas con el fin deidentificar zonas en las que pudiera haber reservas de agua que puedan ser interesantes para misiones futuras. Además de en la precisión delas maniobras, los científicos se han centrado en que la graduación de los diez instrumentos que debutarán del 19al 20 de agosto enel acercamiento ala Luna sea perfecto.
Laobservación comenzará una hora antes de acercarse al satélite dela Tierra, tendrá 15 minutos de máximo acercamiento a la superficie, y se mantendrá una hora después desde que la nave empiece a alejarse y poner rumbo a Venus, hacia donde se aproximará en agosto de 2025.0 0 0 0 0 0.
