Investigación sobre el cáncer Columna124 de septiembre fue el Día Internacional dela Investiga-E ción en Cáncer, nos brindala oportunidad de reflexionar y educar sobre una enfermedad que, año tras año, afecta amiles de personas en Chile. El cáncer es un problema que se originaa nivel celular, donde, en condicionescontroladas, el crecimiento de lascélulas está bajo un control preciso. Sin embargo, cuando ese control se pierde, las células malignas se multiplican sin freno, formando tumoesque pueden invadir tejidos cercanos y propagarse a otras partes del cuerpo a través de la metástasis. Aunquesehanlogrado avances significativosensu lucha, estamoslejos de alcanzar una “cura”. Lostratamientos actuales, sibien efectivos enciertoscasos, siguen fallando ante tumores agresivoso en etapas avanzadas dela enfermedad.
Resulta por ende crucial profundizar nuestro conocimiento sobre las diferencias entre las células normales y malignas, y las células propias del nicho tumoral, todo con el fin de identificar formas más eficaces de atacarlas, minimizando el daño las células sanas y daños colaterales. Enestecontexto, los científicos especializados en biologíacelularson fundamentales para comprender los mecanismos que permiten el crecimiento descontrolado de las células malignas. Sinsu aporte, el desarrollo de nuevas terapias dirigidas sería muy limitado. Sin embargo, uno de los grandes desafíos que enfrentamos en Chile es la desconexión entre el mundo científico y el lí nico. Esta falta de diálogo retrasa la implementación de los avances científicos en la práctica médica. Para enfrentar este desafío, es imprescindible replantear cómo formamos a las nuevas generaciones de especialistas. Tanto los científicos como los clínicos deben recibir una formación que fomente la colaboración y el intercambio de conocimientos. No podemos permitir queestos dos mundos trabajen por carrilesseparados. Es necesario crear espacios de formación conjunta, dondeambos campos dialoguen de maneranatural desde los primeros años de su formación. Solo así podremos garantizar que los avances científicos setraduzcan en mejoras tangibles paralos pa-cientes. El Estado deChile tiene allíunrol crucial. Es fundamental asignar fondos para proyectos que promuevan esta visión colaborativa y que valoren el conocimiento generado por las universidades y centros de investigación. Al mismo tiempo, debemos asegurar que las futuras generaciones de científicos y clínicos se formen en un entorno de cooperación y entendimiento mutuo..
