Esto debido a que se trata de una zona con una alta biodiversidad de especies, sitios de alimentación y reproducción de aves y mamíferos marinos y con presencia de especies en categorías de conservación "En Peligro", de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN) como el Pingiiino de Humboldt, Gaviotín chico y el Chungungo, entre otros.
Durante la última visita de la ministra a la ciudad, se reunió con la ONG, quienes conversaron con ella, señalando que fue una reunión muy provechosa, ya que buscaL a ONG Corporación ron entregar una misión y visión respecto a lo quese quiere hacer en el sector de Patache por parte de las comunidades costeras aledañas. "Esto permitirá que se lleve al consejo de ministros para efectos de poder apoyar la declaración de este sector de Patache y Río Seco como un espacio costero protegido de múltiple uso", así comentó Enzo Rojas, de la ONG Corporación Norte Grande, quien junto a otras comunidades dialogaron con la autoridad central.
En este contexto, la ministra Rojas destacó que "contar con nuevas áreas marinas permite proteger la biodiversidad de la región, así como el desarrollo social de las comunidades, salvaguardando por ejemplo la pesca, principal sustento de los residentes del sector". En la ONG explicaron que este es un proceso largo que demora cerca de 4 años, lo mismo que demoró el proceso de declaración en el sector de Pisagua, pero indicaron que años se demora el proceso de declaratoria de área marina protegida, según ONG. ya avanzaron con la entrega del informe a la ministra para que sea revisado en consejo.
El que ambos sectores sean declarados como Área de Conservación de Múltiples Usos generaría un plan de administración en conjunto con organizaciones del Estado, donde todos administran este sector de conservación. "De hecho, hay planes que contemplan algunos sectores aledaños muy cercanos a Patache, para efecto de evaluar si hay cambios importantes y significativos en la biodiversidad en función de las actividades que serealizan que son variadas y no solo empresas, personas igual que llegan en grupos al sector de Patache también". De ser declarada, Punta Patache Río Seco, se convertiría en la segunda Área Marina Protegida de Múltiples Usos de la región de Tarapacá.
