ESTRATEGIA DE NATURALEZA, CONSERVACIÓN Y BIODIVERSIDAD: LA SOSTENIBILIDAD INTEGRAL COMO UNA PIEZA CLAVE EN LAS OPERACIONES DE CMPC
EMPRESAS ADHERIDASSU RELACIÓN CON ACCIÓN EMPRESAS CMPC es parte del comité estratégico del Plan de Acción Empresarial en Biodiversidad que Acción Empresas está impulsando, junto al Ministerio del Medio Ambiente, para desarrollar una guía sólida para el sector empresarial chileno y su contribución activa en el cumplimiento del Marco Mundial de Diversidad Biológica Kunming-Montreal. El plan será presentado en la COP16 y sentará las bases para la colaboración continua y efectiva entre empresas y autoridades en esta materia a nivel global.
A un año de su puesta en marcha, el plan ha evidenciado la relación virtuosa que CMPC posee entre las actividades productivas desarrolladas en plantaciones forestales y las áreas de conservación, al alcanzar un 96% de la meta de aumentar en 100 mil hectáreas de conservación al 2030. encuentran los servicios ecosistémicos, con los que se identifica y relevan los distintos beneficios que se obtienen al interactuar con los ecosistemas, como, por ejemplo, el turismo y la contemplación de bosques y paisajes. Finalmente, están las soluciones basadas en la naturaleza, acciones dirigidas a proteger, gestionar y restaurar de manera sostenible ecosistemas naturales o modificados, beneficiando tanto a las personas como al medioambiente. “La Estrategia de Naturaleza, Conservación y Biodiversidad se desarrolló como una herramienta que llegó a promover una nueva cultura organizacional dentro de CMPC.
Con ella no solo se consolida un trabajo en pos del medioambiente que la compañía ha ejecutado hace años, sino que establece nuevas metas ycompromisos en materia de sostenibilidad que profundizan aún más el impacto positivo que buscamos generar tanto a nivel de conservación y preservación, como a nivel productivo”, sostuvo Verónica de la Cerda, gerente de Sostenibilidad Corporativa de la compañía.
FUTURAS ÁREAS DE CONSERVACIÓN Y PRODUCCIÓNLa estrategia también contempla la puesta en marcha el proyecto CMPC Patagonia, en la Región de Aysén, con el que se destinarán las 26 mil hectáreas que posee en Coyhaique para crear un polo de conservación, restauración y preservación en la zona.
Esto, dado que el proyecto actuará como un sumidero de carbono permanente y corredor biológico, además deCPMCconsiderar la apertura del Parque Cóndor al público para actividades recreacionales, la recuperación de especies nativas y la protección del huemul como especie endémica, entre otros. Asimismo, la compañía también está en el proceso de evaluación de un nuevo proyecto de celulosa en el estado de Río Grande do Sul, Brasil, llamado Natureza.
Bajo una concepción integral, este no solo contempla la construcción de una fábrica que producirá hasta 2,5 millones de toneladas anuales de celulosa kraft blanqueada de fibra corta, el desarrollo de un nuevo terminal portuario, la ampliación del Puerto de Pelotas y la generación de 12 mil empleos, sino que también considera la creación del Parque Ecológico Barba Negra, el cual se convertirá en referencia para la preservación, biodiversidad, estudiosambientales y conocimiento general, mediante un circuito debidamente protegido y sustentable que permitirá recorrer y conocer parte de la flora y fauna nativa de mayor relevancia para el estado. INNOVAR PARA CUIDAR, CONSERVAR Y PRESERVARSumado al aumento de áreas de conservación, CMPC está desarrollando nuevas herramientas que les permitirán implementartecnologías y metodologías que evalúen el éxito de la estrategia desde un criterio innovador.
Entre ellos, se encuentra el muestreo de ADN para definir las líneas base de la biodiversidad que habita en los bosques, a lo que se suma el estudio de la creación de figuras legales que permitan generar alianzas con otros actores del mundo público y privado con las que se busca trabajar en conjunto para garantizar el cuidado y preservación de especies y ecosistemas vulnerables. CPMCEl cambio climático y el compromiso por el cuidado y preservación del medioambiente es algo que en CMPC, como compañía forestal y papelera, asumen con responsabilidad y medidas económicas, sociales y medioambientales concretas.
Reflejo de ello es la consolidación de la pionera Estrategia de Naturaleza, Conservación y Biodiversidad, que la compañía lanzó en 2023, que, entre otros objetivos, busca poner en valor más de 400 mil hectáreas de bosques que poseen en Chile, Brasil y Argentina.

Hasta 2018, la compañía poseía más de 320 mil. Asimismo, la empresa elevó de 139 a 312 hectáreas las zonas de alto valor de conservación, en donde hay presencia de ecosistemas con especies en peligro de extinción. Estos objetivos se enmarcan en los cuatro pilares bajo los cuales se elaboró la estrategia.
En primer lugar, se encuentra el de biodiversidad, cuyo fin es fomentar y proteger toda la vida existente en el planeta (plantas, animales, organismos microscópicos y seres humanos). Otro de los ejes es la territorialidad, con la cual se incorpora la visión del paisaje y el interés de las comunidades que habitan en los bosques y sus alrededores, para así tener una mirada integral de estos. Diseñada e implementada para afianzar y robustecer los lineamientos que la compañía posee en materia de sostenibilidad empresarial, la Estrategia de Naturaleza, Conservación y Biodiversidad de CMPC avanza firme en la concreción de sus objetivos y la puesta en valor de sus bosques.
